Call for Submissions: SAWCC’s Annual Visual Arts Show

A Bomb, With Ribbon Around It

Curated by Raúl Zamudio
Submission deadline: August 31, 2013

SAWCC is pleased to announce a call for submissions for its forthcoming annual visual arts exhibition, this year entitled, A Bomb, With Ribbon Around It, to be held at the Queens Museum of Art (New York) from December 8, 2013 to January 14, 2014.

The theme of this year’s show dovetails with the Surrealist André Breton’s famous response to encountering Frida Kahlo’s art: “a ribbon around a bomb.” His poetic description of Kahlo’s painting was based on its differentiation from her male Mexican artistic contemporaries, many of whom were mired in nationalist and regionalist iconography. In contrast, Kahlo primarily focused on social and political questions ciphered through her protean identity and personal history.

This exhibition will use Breton’s descriptive as curatorial foil, seeking works by South Asian women that use depictions of the self in personal, social or cultural guises that will be as appealing, unassuming, demure, and even innocent as a beautiful ribbon; yet untying that ribbon triggers an explosion of subject matter that addresses contemporary conditions of globalization, such as politics, immigration, gender equality, sexuality, and religion. Submitted artworks that engage the above can be in any media, including painting, work-on-paper, sculpture, installation, photography, video, performance, Internet-based art, and audio works.
